There are three basic factors affecting the HIV prevalence in the district namely;
- The high poverty levels among the population.
- The low levels of education.
- Cross generation sex.
The district has a total of 40 HIV counselling centres, and 8 voluntary counselling and testing service centres. In 2006-2007 the number of people counselled was 4589.
